There is a fine line between "let's work together" and "we're watching you." And this is only just the beginning…
What is Artificial Intelligence? Well, there are two leading companies, and the government just signed agreements with both of them.
“OpenAI is the renowned AI research company founded in 2015 with the mission of ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits humanity as a whole. They have developed several groundbreaking language models, including the popular GPT-3, which has garnered widespread attention for its impressive language generation capabilities.”
There is also another company, Anthropic, which is a relatively new AI research company “founded in 2021 by individuals with backgrounds in machine learning and AI safety. Their focus is on developing AI systems that are aligned with human values and interests, with a strong emphasis on ethical and responsible AI development.”
Both OpenAI and Anthropic have developed high level language models with amazing capabilities.
“One of the key differentiators between OpenAI and Anthropic lies in their approach to ethical AI development. While OpenAI has primarily focused on pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities, Anthropic has placed a strong emphasis on instilling ethical principles and values into its AI systems.”
This new agreement will give the U.S. Government early access to major new model releases. Governments around the world have been evaluating the risks of these powerful new AI algorithms, pushing for legislative measures.
Anthropic and OpenAI have each signed a memorandum of understanding to allow formal collaboration with the new US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, that President Biden signed into executive order - a part of the Commerce Departments National Institute of Standards & Technology.
I guess large language models are very useful for dealing with paperwork. But people are also saying Open AI put a certain someone (former NSA director) on their board with deep ties to government and “BOOM they have a signed agreement a few months later. Timing is everything I guess.”
Right now the agreements are on behalf of "safety" or "regulation," but we know - as Americans - we have to make sure this isn’t about control over information, control over people, and control over the future.
Only time will tell. But I do think this is how the movie the Terminator started. People have already expressed their hesitancy in using Chat-GPT anymore, now that the government is on board.
The primary concern is on the US governments intent. Amidst global unrest in multiple regions, proxy wars and competitors in other countries teetering with AI precision weapons, AI drones, and finally self awareness - is this about safety and regulation, or the opposite? An upper hand?
